Excerpts: I can not say that I agree or disagree with Puffy’s thoughts; however, I do agree that DJ’s need to step up their game and not be afraid to explore other genres of music. Interestingly enough, last year I had the opportunity to attend Puffy’s private after-after party at his Star Island home in Miami. The DJ for the night was Felix Da Housecat. Although he is not my favorite house DJ, it was definitely refreshing to hear something other than Hip-Hop at the Hip-Hop Moguls house party. Contrary to what most people think, Puffy is a huge house head and he loves all types of music. His “Main Event” last year at Winter Music Conference featured Steve Angello, Claude Vonstroke, and the Martinez Brothers who are dance music’s newest prodigies. As I was catching up on today’s news over at Bossip.com, I came across a post regarding Puffy’s take on the state of DJ’s and Hip-Hop. As some one that has a love/hate opinion about Puffy and someone that works with DJ’s I was eager to read his opinions.
He tells MTV.com, “People have figured out the formula when they make records for radio, and DJs ain’t DJs no more. DJs don’t break records no more. DJs don’t play album cuts. DJs play what is going to move the crowd. DJs, they don’t expose you to the newness. That was the DJs’ thing. Hip-hop is in a recession also.”
