Puffy aka Sean Combs aka P. Diddy thinks DJ’s Need To Step Up Their Game!

As I was catching up on today’s news over at Bossip.com, I came across a post regarding Puffy’s take on the state of DJ’s and Hip-Hop. As some one that has a love/hate opinion about Puffy and someone that works with DJ’s I was eager to read his opinions.

He tells MTV.com, “People have figured out the formula when they make records for radio, and DJs ain’t DJs no more. DJs don’t break records no more. DJs don’t play album cuts. DJs play what is going to move the crowd. DJs, they don’t expose you to the newness. That was the DJs’ thing. Hip-hop is in a recession also.”

I can not say that I agree or disagree with Puffy’s thoughts; however, I do agree that DJ’s need to step up their game and not be afraid to explore other genres of music. Interestingly enough, last year I had the opportunity to attend Puffy’s private after-after party at his Star Island home in Miami. The DJ for the night was Felix Da Housecat. Although he is not my favorite house DJ, it was definitely refreshing to hear something other than Hip-Hop at the Hip-Hop Moguls house party. Contrary to what most people think, Puffy is a huge house head and he loves all types of music. His “Main Event” last year at Winter Music Conference featured Steve Angello, Claude Vonstroke, and the Martinez Brothers who are dance music’s newest prodigies.

M.I.A Exposed for Questionable Use of Lyrics?

I came across an interesting press release on Billboard Publicity Wire that I wanted to share. As some one that is intrigued with “freedom of speech”, I am a bit torn by the apparent publicity stunt that this press release is attempting to pull off. In one respect, I completed agree with the artists DeLon’s right to produce what he is calling “an educational video containing graphic evidence of M.I.A’s imagery…” and possible ties to terriost organizations, but than on the other hand is he using her to gain his on publicist????? Was M.I.A. Exposed or has she just been Exposed to LIFE?????

For more information about his controversial remix of M.I.A’s “Paper Plans”, which is featured in the movie Pineapple Express and how Universal Music Group (UMG) had his video removed from Youtube download the press release here. To view DeLon’s video visit www.ceylonrecords.com.

I was very fortunate to spend Saturday reliving Hip-Hop’s glory days at the ROCK THE BELLS festival. With 2008 marking the first year the ROCK THE BELLS festival will go global with four stops in Europe and one in Japan highlights of the festival include a return to the Glen Helen Pavilion in San Bernardino, CA where last year’s show sold out with a capacity crowd of 45,000 people. Although, I was back stage the entire show and was not able to enjoy the festival as a true fan due to the heat in San Bernardino, the performances I did catch were truly special. Not to mention, it was great being able to mix it up with old friends like Fat Lip (Pharcyde), Fuzzy (Los Angeles’s Power 106), Hen Gee (Ice-T), Herm & Jackie (Dub Magazine), Bri aka DJ 88 and be in the presence of others including will.I.AM (Black Eyed Peas), Rakim, and many more. As you can imagine my number one highlight was seeing NAS perform One Mic. If you love Hip-Hop and you are up to being Exposed to LIFE Music this is a must see festival.

About the Festival

Rock The Bells is an annual hip hop festival that took place in California, until just recently when it was announced that the festival will travel to multiple locations. The first festival was held in 2004, and featured a re-united Wu-Tang Clan, who performed 4 months before Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s death. ROCK THE BELLS has established itself as a world-class hip-hop platform by hosting legendary performances. The 2007 festival series included performances by a reunited Rage Against the Machine, the Wu Tang Clan, Public Enemy celebrating their 20th anniversary as a band and many more. The tradition of top names and memorable performances continues in 2008 as the line-up and routing for this year’s ROCK THE BELL 2008 International festival series powered by SanDisk included hip-hop all-stars A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Nas, Mos Def, Rakim, Method Man & Redman, Raekwon & Ghostface (Cuban Linx), Immortal Technique, Dead Prez, Murs, Kidz In The Hall and the reunited The Pharcyde, and special guests. Fans will also see performances by the brightest names in the emerging electro-hip hop scene including Spank Rock, Santogold, Kid Sister, Wale, Jay Electronica and The Cool Kids with hosts B-Real of Cypress Hill and the world renowned Supernatural.
